Superior Ice, Oil on Canvas, 30"x40"
This was painted from a plein air study I did on a warm spring day on the shore just north of the Stewart River, slightly north of the famous Betty's Pies.
Colorado River, Oil on canvas, 30"x40"
This is a compilation of several plein air studies I did on the rim of the Grand Canyon. I was struck by how vivid the blue green water in the Colorado River was.
Sugarloaf Cove, Oil on canvas, 30"x40"
This is a great spot for a quiet getaway. The cove creates a calm area to the lake where you can clearly see the rocky bottom.
Farm on the Corner, Oil on canvas, 30"x48"
This is an areas in the bluffs south of Winona, Mn. Untouched by the glaciers this area has bountiful ravines and bluffs. There are also some great places to get a panoramic view of the Mississippi River.
Striped Cliff, Oil on Canvas, 24"x37"
This was painted from a plein air studio I did in the Badlands of SD. There were several mountain goats passing through when I painted this. Unfortunately they didn't stay long enough.
Brule River Falls, Oil on canvas, 28.5"x32"
This is the lower falls on the Brule River in Judge Magney State Park north of Grand Marais, MN. It was a warm day when I painted the plein air study that this is based on but I was cooled by the mist from the falls drifting over me.
Quiet Dock, Oil on canvas, 24"x48"
This spot is on the Keweenaw Peninsula in Upper Michigan on the east side in a little bay off of Lake Superior. I watched a fishing boat leave as I painted the study.
Lake Beacon, Oil on canvas, 32'x56"
This is loosely based on a plein air painting and my memories of Lake Superior.
North Shore Falls, Oil on canvas, 30"x40"
This is not any particular waterfall on the north shore. Over the years I have been to most of the waterfalls on the rivers that feed into Lake Superior. This painting is all of them merged together in my mind.
Yellow Hills, Oil on casnvas, 30"x40"
This painting is from two plein air studies I did in the Badlands. I love painting there, it is such a contrast to the Minnesota landscapes. When painting the study for the distant buttes I could hear back country hikers talking as they followed the trails.
Sunset in the Hills. Oil on canvas, 24"x24"
Many times after painting a painting just before sunset I turn aroud to the opposite direction and see another great opportunity for a painting. This is that great opportunity. I had half an hour for the study before the sun completely set.
Superior Rocks, Oil on canvas, 24"x24"
This was painted from a small watercolor study I painted on the shore in Cascade State Park. I liked the composition. This is a little different style being more impressionistic than most of my other paintings.
Jenny Gulth, Oil on cnvas, 36"48"
This is a great spot deep in the Black Hills of SD. I could hear people fishing just around the the rocky point but never say them while I was painting.
Canyon Ledge, Oil on canvas, 24"x36"
This was painted from a plein air study of Maricopa Point on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. I painted this without the signs and railings to make it look like it did when the first explorers were there.
Harvest Time, Oil on canvas, 36"x48"
This is a farm near where my wife grew up. I painted the study at harvest time. The combines had just finished the fields in the back when I started.
Canyon Trail, Oil on Canvas, 24"x36"
This is painted from a study of the south rim of the Grand Canyon looking down to a spur of the South Kaibab Trail. I was waiting for some family who hiked down to the Phantom Ranch.
Gooseberry, Oil on canvas, 24"x24"
This is from a study painted in late spring at Gooseberry State Park. While painting the study a massive amount of ice let go up river and nearly took me and my equipment down with it.
Frantenac Fal, Oil on canvas, 24"x36"
This is looking north while standing on the hill by the park entrance. It was a glorious fall day.
Yellow House, Oil on canvas, 30"x40"
This is a painting about small town memories.
Fort Ridgely Creek, Oil on canvas, 30"x40"
This creek runs next to the camp grounds at Fort Ridgely State Park. My sons were busy all day catching frogs when I painted the study for this painting. I think the count was over twenty.
Corner Brick House, Oil on canvas, 32"x32"
This is a painting based on memories of growing up in a small town.
Black Hills Stream, Oil on canvas, 28"x44"
This painted from a study I did in the Black Hills of SD. I like to head down forest roads not knowing where they will take me. One took me to this spot.
Autumn Trio, Oil on canvas, 36"x48"
This is based on an old study I did in Nerstrand Big Woods State Park. I thought these trees looked like good friends that have sen a lot together.
